Teacher's & Parents Guide

Introduction

Welcome to the FREE twelve series of interactive, animated storybooks on the adventures of Tiger Aki ™ . Every month a new animated story on the adventures of Tiger Aki aimed for 2 - 7 years old children will be published online.
The first series was published in November 2000 and has proved to be a great success for children both in popularity and in developing learning skills.

Aims

These animated stories will help your child to develop his/her reading and vocabulary learning skills and enjoy computer experience by using a computer mouse.
The Tiger Aki ™ books are aimed at children from the ages of 2 to 7 years to enhance their pre-school learning.

The books have been carefully planned and delivered taking into account the pre-school English National Curriculum in the UK.

Attainment Target 1: Speaking and listening :
Tips: Ask questions to clarify understanding - The storybooks on each page do not continue until 'mouse click' has taken place. This offers the opportunity for the parent/teacher to ask questions in order to clarify understanding.

Attainment Target 2: Reading
All Tiger Aki books cover skill levels 1-8 in reading ability.
For the enabled pupil, the books cover Keystage 2, AT 2 reading skills e.g.

Reading for information - Scan texts to find the object to highlight
Literature: Recognise the difference between narrator and character

The Tiger Aki books provide the user with the option to have narrated sound. This will encourage the younger age group to develop listening and vocabulary skills. The Tiger Aki books without the narrated sound option will encourage children from the age of 3-7 to develop on their reading and language skills.

Your child will:

  • Build on vocabulary
  • Discover cause and effect
  • React to and recognise sounds in the world we live in today
  • Be stimulated by the interaction required from them when provided with on screen instructions to click on an object
  • Be prepared for pre-school learning
  • Sustain concentration
  • Find the books useful so that they are encouraged to speak clearly, fluently and confidently

How the books work

The Tiger Aki books navigation assumes that you have already loaded the Flash plugin on your PC, relevant to your Internet browser type. See notes on Technical Support for guidance if you are unsure.

A 'paintbrush' icon narrates each Tiger Aki book in the series.
During the story, the user might be given an instruction to 'click' on an object on the page. This object will be highlighted on the page to help the child. The 'Easel' icon that appears on the screen reminds the user to 'Click now' on the object. When the correct object is clicked the animation will take place. Otherwise, on a page where there is no user interaction, the 'Easel' will remind the user to click on it in order to move on to the next page of the book.

The user also has the option to start each book back to the beginning during any stage of viewing. The user can also switch to no sound or vice versa during any stage of the book.

Pilot running

A pilot run of three of the following books in the series has been carried out on mixed ability children between the ages of 2 to 7 to ensure that the books are targeted to the correct age group and stretches the ability of an enabled user.

Tiger Aki at the Supermarket
Tiger Aki at the Zoo
Tiger Aki's Bathtime

Thank you to Tolworth's Infant School and Our Lady Immaculate Primary School for their help in the pilot running of the storybooks.
